5.0 out of 5 stars Best bang for buck gaming laptop IMHO
By Zach Mathews
This has been a great computer, plays everything that I've thrown at it, not at top specs but more then enough for me. Thermal control is better then expected, it can be a little loud but nothing near my last asus ROG machine. I upgraded to 16GB ram and windows ran better but didn't notice a ton in games.Pros:-Bang for your buck-USB-C-easy to upgrade-Looks like a gaming laptop without being obnoxious-Power brick is really compact for this type of computerCons:-The middle hinge is a little scary, you have to open it from the middle. If you open it with the corners it flexes the screen a lot.-Wish the power button was on the side so I don't have to open it when it's plugged into my monitor-Battery life is good for a gaming laptop but realistically 3-4 hours of normal use. 1-2 hours of gaming maybe.-USB-C isn't thunderbolt

4.0 out of 5 stars Great For Gaming Without Going Broke
By Charles K. Foster
I needed a new laptop for gaming, streaming, etc. I went with HP because my old HP laptop is 6 years old and still works fairly well and that impressed me that I was getting something new that would last awhile. But, as always happens, it had become frustratingly technically out-of-date for running some games and was also very slow due to low free memory. This new model is tons more powerful and triple the memory. I have yet to find a game I was unable to play on it and watching videos/streams is mostly without flaw. Battery life is not great, I would imagine because of the amount of energy it needs to be as cool as it is. This was not a deal-breaker for me because I really wasn't getting it for portable use anyway, so mine is always plugged in. 2 relatively minor issues I've had should be noted: The keyboard is backlit but this model turns off the backlighting after about 10 seconds of you not typing. As far as I'm concerned that defeats the purpose of the feature in that it doesn't remain constantly lit in the dark. There are no BIOS or other setting options to change this so it's a little annoying. Secondly, there seems to be a slight problem with the volume when watching movies off of streaming sites like Amazon Prime Video and NetFlix. At MAXIMUM speaker volume and MAXIMUM stream volume, the sound is acceptable but you can't get it any higher than an average output. It does NOT, however, have this problem when playing games, so I dunno what's up with that. I contacted HP about it, but they've never gotten back to me on it. I've found it to be a pretty minor annoyance though as if needs be I can still use my old laptop if I need to watch something at a louder volume. All in all, I'm pretty happy with this model, though I'll update this review if anything new, good or bad, comes up with it. I decided to wait 3 months of using it before offering my opinion, and there you have it. ;)

4.0 out of 5 stars Review is for 18..5 inch model; not 15.7; good value for 18.5 model

I purchased two 18.5 inch model AX18, and it looks like my review is tied to a 15.6 inch model instead, as though perhaps I purchased two at a lower price point than intended? The value was outstanding for $400..00. My review is for the 18.5 inch model which is 11 x 17 by about 1 inches in total size. The huge trackpad gets in the way a bit, but it does work and is sensitive. It can be disabled. The very large screen is beautiful and true to color, and great for movies, albeit with weak and tinny speakers. The camera is really grainy, you will use your Logitec one that is much better in low light. The case is kind of twisty plastic, and keyboard has a kind of flimsy feel to it. However, it functions just fine.It is really quite fast. I am playing around with typical office apps, big spreadsheets and so far looks great. I will eventually attempt image and video editing. hoping this keeps up. A slightly rickety, fast, wonderful display old fashioned computer. I do find myself absently touching the screen as I’ve been so “touch screen” for the past few months, and no this is not a touch screen laptop. The power supply and plug are annoyingly “non standard”. 19V 2.1a output, the sorta cheapie 57 inch power cord and odd connector are a bit worrisome.
