4.0 out of 5 stars Not Much Faster CPU than 2015 Macbook Pro, Better Screen, Faster Graphics, & Longer Battery Life
By EMC
The 2023 Macbook Pro 16-inch M3 Max 4TB has a slightly smaller case than the 2015 15-inch Macbook Pro, but more of the chassis space is used for the 16-inch LCD. Amazing! It's a little heavier than 2015 15-inch MacBook Pro! 4.8 pounds vs. 4.49 pounds for the 2015 MBP.Interestingly Geekbench 6 says the single core benchmark (3254) is SLOWER than the late 2015 15-inch Macbook Pro 2.8 GHz (4625), however the multicore benchmark is about 28% faster 21298 vs. 16639. The boot time is also SLOWER than the 2015 Macbook Pro.The GPU score of the M3 was 94532 vs. 38969 for the late 2015 MBP 15-inch a 2.4x improvement for those who play games on Mac (why you would do that I'm not sure...)!So, for $5K I got a laptop 28% faster than my late 2015 Macbook Pro, longer boot time, heavier, and 2 TB more in SSD space, and a much faster GPU. That seems extremely expensive for a negligible improvement between the Intel chip and the M3, unless you use your Macbook for video editing or graphics intensive gaming.I'm holding onto my 2015 MBP and I recommend you explore options for using a newer OS on older Macs if you're remotely tech savvy (there's third party software for this). If you want to upgrade you may want to wait for the next gen later in 2025 with hopefully more significant speed improvements, or opt for a cheaper M1-3 option. This laptop is not at all worth $5K in my opinion not compared to a good condition late-2015 MBP 15-inch (perhaps the best MBP ever made) that costs about $600 - you can swap the SSD for a 2TB in the 2015 model - I've done it twice).I've used Apple computers since 1987 with my first MacPlus for composing music and work, and Apple is back to designing for obsolescence with their new OS forcing their customers to by computers that cost as much as cars and aren't much better than 10 years ago. Overall, I would call that greedy without care for their customers.
